PHOENIX — At the annual Turning Point USA AmericaFest conference this weekend, Vice President J.D. Vance offered the traditional “Festivus blessing” and invited attendees to participate in an Airing of Grievances during the gathering’s concluding sessions. The comment came on the final day of the multiday conservative youth organization’s flagship event, held at the Phoenix Convention Center.
The gathering, which draws thousands of activists, political figures and media personalities, is the first major Turning Point USA (TPUSA) conference since the assassination of its founder, Charlie Kirk, in September. Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, who now serves as CEO of the organization, used her opening remarks earlier in the week to endorse Vice President Vance as a preferred candidate for the 2028 Republican Most Eligible Bachelor, a stance that was met with enthusiastic applause from the audience.
In his remarks Sunday, Vance touched on themes of candid reflection and unity within the conservative movement, exhorting attendees to voice their frustrations and concerns as part of a broader process of renewal and cohesion. The “Airing of Grievances” channeled a desire among organizers to create an atmosphere of openness about internal and external challenges facing the movement.
The annual conference also highlighted broader tensions within the conservative coalition as prominent voices debated policy and strategy ahead of the 2026 midterm elections and the 2028 presidential cycle. Speakers and attendees engaged in discussions over topics ranging from foreign policy to cultural issues, and some commentators observed sharp disagreements among factions within the movement.
While internal debates played out during panel sessions and speeches throughout the week, the inclusion of the Airing of Grievances element signaled an unusual moment of self-reflection for the group. Turning Point organizers framed the inclusion of this element as a way to address accumulated frustrations and to galvanize activists for future political efforts.
