Washington, DC — Vice President JD Vance spent Tuesday morning recognizing International Men’s Day in an unexpectedly personal way: by stepping into the kitchen of the Naval Observatory and preparing a traditional quiche Lorraine.
According to staff members, the vice president began the day with a small gathering that included aides, kitchen staff, and a handful of guests representing men’s advocacy and mentorship groups. The event combined light-hearted cooking with discussions on men’s health, family roles, and workplace well-being.
“Too often, the focus on discussions about men’s challenges gets lost in larger debates,” Vance said during brief remarks before the cooking demonstration. “Days like this give us a moment to pause, celebrate the men in our lives, and remind one another of the importance of responsibility, community, and humility.”
The vice president, wearing a blue apron embroidered with the presidential seal, reportedly handled much of the recipe himself—whisking eggs, chopping bacon, and layering the flaky crust before placing the dish in the oven. He credited the recipe to his grandmother, who taught him basic cooking skills while he was growing up in Middletown, Ohio.
Political observers noted that Vance’s approach to the day reflected a broader effort by the administration to highlight everyday traditions and human-interest themes. The White House press office described the event as “a light, personal acknowledgment of International Men’s Day and an opportunity to promote balance, health, and community among men in all stages of life.”
The finished quiche, according to attendees, was “crispy on the edges and rich with flavor.” The vice president reportedly joked that it “probably won’t win any awards,” but added that sharing food is often “the simplest way to start a real conversation.”
