Los Angeles - President Donald Trump announced Sunday that he will deploy units of the National Guard to Los Angeles to “observe and assist” during the upcoming parade celebrating the Los Angeles Dodgers’ World Series victory. The decision, the White House said, is aimed at ensuring public safety and maintaining order as city officials anticipate one of the largest gatherings in recent memory.
According to a statement released by the administration, the deployment will consist of approximately 800 National Guard members, who will work alongside the Los Angeles Police Department and other local agencies. “This is a moment of great pride for Los Angeles and the entire country,” the statement read. “The President wants to make sure the celebration remains safe, peaceful, and enjoyable for all.”
White House Press Secretary Karolyn Leavitt described the move as “purely precautionary,” emphasizing that there have been no specific threats or indications of unrest. “Given the scale of the event, federal support is a standard measure,” Leavitt said during Monday’s press briefing.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass acknowledged that the city had been in discussions with federal authorities about potential crowd-control assistance. However, she clarified that the National Guard’s role would be limited to observation and logistical support. “We expect this to be a joyous occasion,” Bass said. “Our primary concern is crowd safety, not enforcement.”
Reactions from local leaders and community groups were mixed. Some praised the decision as a practical step to manage what could be a crowd exceeding one million fans. Others expressed concern about the symbolism of a military presence at a civic celebration.
“We want to celebrate baseball, not send a message of intimidation,” said Rafael Ortega, director of the Los Angeles Civil Liberties Forum. “It’s important that the National Guard’s presence be as minimal and unobtrusive as possible.”
The Dodgers’ victory parade, scheduled for Thursday morning, will begin at Dodger Stadium and proceed through downtown before concluding at City Hall. City officials have advised attendees to use public transportation and arrive early.
