Opinion - When President Donald Trump ordered thousands of National Guard troops and 700 active-duty Marines into Los Angeles to quell protests in June 2025, the official justification was to restore order amid unrest over immigration enforcement. Yet, a closer look at the context and the city’s unique demographics suggests there may have been a deeper, more strategic motivation—one that goes beyond crowd control and touches on international geopolitics.
Los Angeles is home to the largest population of Iranians outside of Iran itself. Estimates put the number of Iranian-Americans in the region as high as 700,000, with the Westwood neighborhood—dubbed “Tehrangeles”—serving as a cultural and commercial hub for this vibrant community. California as a whole, and Los Angeles in particular, are recognized as the epicenter of Iranian life in America, with more than a third of all Iranian-born immigrants in the U.S. residing in the LA metropolitan area.
The official narrative centered on the need to “temporarily protect ICE and other United States Government personnel” and to safeguard federal property during protests. However, the scale and nature of the deployment—overriding the objections of California’s governor and involving not just the National Guard but also active-duty Marines—was unprecedented. This was not merely a local law enforcement augmentation; it was a militarization of a major American city with a unique demographic profile.
Why position such a significant military force in Los Angeles, of all places? The answer may lie in the city’s status as the global center of the Iranian diaspora. With tensions between the U.S. and Iran simmering for years, and with Trump’s campaign rhetoric promising the “largest mass deportation initiative in U.S. history” and readiness to use military force to achieve his goals, the deployment could be interpreted as a signal—or even a preparation—for a broader confrontation with Iran.
By placing military assets in the city with the largest Iranian population outside Iran, the administration may have been aiming to:
This move fits a pattern of escalation and normalization of military involvement in domestic affairs under the guise of crisis response. It also aligns with Trump’s willingness to override state authority and deploy federal forces without local consent. The timing—amidst both domestic protests and ongoing tensions with Iran—raises legitimate questions about the true objectives.
While the administration’s stated goal was to quell “riots” and protect federal personnel, the choice of Los Angeles, given its unique Iranian-American demographic, cannot be ignored. In the context of a broader, aggressive posture toward Iran, the deployment of troops in LA looks less like crisis management and more like strategic positioning—part of a larger plan that could include military action against Iran.
History will judge whether this was prudent preparation or an ominous overreach. But for now, the people of Los Angeles—and especially its Iranian-American community—deserve transparency about why their city became the staging ground for such an extraordinary show of force.
