Trump-Zelensky Meeting Ends in Turmoil as Putin Offers Mineral Deal

Washington, DC - A high-stakes meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House ended in acrimony, followed by an unexpected offer from Russian President Vladimir Putin to grant the United States access to rare earth minerals in formerly Ukrainian territories.

The Oval Office encounter on Friday quickly devolved into a heated exchange, with Trump and Vice President JD Vance berating Zelensky for what they perceived as a lack of gratitude for American support. "You're either going to make a deal or we're out," Trump reportedly told Zelensky, adding ominously, "If we're out, you'll have to fight it out. I don't think that will be pretty."

The meeting, which was intended to finalize an agreement granting the U.S. access to Ukraine's rare earth minerals in exchange for continued security support, ended without a deal. Following the confrontation, Trump took to social media, effectively terminating discussions with Ukraine and announcing Zelensky's departure from the White House.

In an unexpected development, Russian President Vladimir Putin seized the opportunity to propose a deal of his own. In an interview broadcast on Russian state television, Putin expressed willingness to cooperate with the U.S. in mining rare earth minerals both in Russia and in parts of Russian-occupied Ukraine.

"Russia is one of the undisputed leaders in terms of reserves of these rare and rare-earth metals," Putin stated, adding, "We would be happy to work together with any foreign partners, including American ones."

This turn of events marks a significant shift in U.S.-Ukraine relations, which have been strained since Trump's return to office in January 2025. The U.S. has provided $65.9 billion in military aid to Ukraine since Russia's invasion in February 2022, but support has wavered under the current administration.

Trump's direct communications with Putin and exclusion of Ukrainian and European involvement in recent peace negotiations have already drawn criticism from Zelensky and European leaders.

Putin's offer to grant the U.S. access to rare earth minerals in formerly Ukrainian territories is likely to further complicate the already tense situation in Eastern Europe. It raises questions about the recognition of Russia's territorial claims and the future of international support for Ukraine's sovereignty.
